About European Spectrometry Services (partnership)
ESS began life as a private partnership Martin Norrey and Nick Whiteley decided to leave their relatively comfortable, relatively well-paid jobs with VG Quadrupoles in order to go it alone.
They both came from a service background and were deeply unhappy at the way in which Fisons had "corporate-ised" VG, turning it from a customer driven organisation in to a stagnating bureaucracy that could take up to two years just to figure out where the logo should go on a company letterhead!. Needless to say, customer satisfaction had been driven to the bottom of the pile during the Fisons take-over and being at the sharp-end, they were in a better position than most to understand the damage this was causing.
Deciding that customers deserved better, and that they were just the people to provide it, Martin and Nick boldly resigned. Working from home initially and fighting off the legal threats from Fisons, they slowly began to grow a business based on reputation for good service. A year on, in rented offices, the company that emerged was European Spectrometry Services. At this time, ESS was a pure service company filling the Fisons void for UK and European users.
After two years in a pure service environment, it was becoming clear that upgrades represented a large part of the future market so ESS began manufacturing a range of innovative upgrade products. Within a year this lead on to our first product the "GeneSys" benchtop MS system. Sales for GeneSys grew and they were soon taking on former employers head-on in many tenders with large organisations. Expansion in to new markets soon followed with the launch of ecoSys the innovative portable mass spectrometer system for environmental applications.
About European Spectrometry Systems Ltd
Focus on new products increased year on year and the change in emphasis was reflected in a name change from "services" to "systems" in the ESS we know today.
By 2004 ESS had expanded so much that the directors felt it was time to take the company out of the private partnership that had served it so well and become a registered limited company. Today's ESS is a dynamic and modern organisation offering a range of products and services world-wide across a diverse customer base spanning Environmental to Medical and Steel manufacture to Semiconductor. Continuous development brings new products like EvoLution benchtop MS and TheRGA for Windows whilst our customer driven policy ensures that we continue to focus on the things our users really want.
