European Spectrometry Systems Environmental Monitoring

When you really need to know

Air quality is a serious global issue which effects millions of people, animals and flora every day.Wheather its's roadside monitoring for BTX, forest canopy terpines or complex chemical source monitoring, ESS has the solution in UniSys, the fully automated, ultra-low level detection system combining reliable Thermal Desorption an d fast MS techniques to give unrivalled performance

Thermal Desorption is a reliable and well established technique providing variable sample-steps by pre-concentrating low level emissions. When Thermal Desorption is combined with MS, the result is a significant increase in analysis speed since eluted species are analysed almost instantaneously. By avoiding the requirement to wait for a GC result, TD-MS is able to run at least three times faster than TD-GC methods. This means that data is not artificially averaged by the long GC analysis period and short emmissions are captured in the close-to-real-time analysis.

Source profiling is enhanced by the TD-MS method as a far better "Time-Resolved" data-set is created. Sub ppb analysis on a typical BTX mixture can be made in less than 3 minutes using the technique and automatically repeated at three minute intervals.!

High Sensitivity and High Speed Thermal Desorption is not a new technique, the principlas and charachteristics of TD are well established and tested. Almost any level of sensitivity may be achieved with TD based upon concentrated sample volume, the principal restrictions are simply practical flow rate and sampling times. Since sampling time is fixed at around 3 minutes for sub ppb levels, MS analysis offers a major speed advantage over GC due to the almost instantaneous measurement times. Eluted gas is instantly transfered to the MS without the need to wait for GC analysis resulting in greatly improved time-trend analysis of emissions.

Huge Dynamic Range The very wide dynamic range offered by the linked TD-MS technique means that analytes may be monitored from sub ppb right through 100% on the same instrument without the requirement for external discreet detectors.

Automatic software controls allow low-level monitoring via the TD with instantaneous switching to direct MS analysis when levels exceed user defined thresholds.Data is continuously stored in the same file with seamless transition between TD-MS and direct MS modes. The combination of TD-MS with direct MS allows analysts to follow source events from ambient thresholds right through hazardous emissions.

Multi-Analyte capability A Mass Spectrometer system may be considered an array of individual anlysers, limited only by mass range.MS Systems are readily able to analyse large numbers of components in complex mixtures within a very short period of timemaking multiple component analysis the norm on a single instrument Where mass overlaps occur within compounds, the MS is able to monitor several mass peaks to allow for positive identification with very little loss of analysis speed.

Multiple Sample points Due to the high speed of MS analyis, there is plenty of time to analyse gas from a number of different sources whilst still cycling faster than GC methods. The addition of our Navigator mult-stream sampling unit allows simple software selection from groups of twenty valves. This system is particularly useful in PPE applications where different areas of plant may need to be monitored for exposure limits.

Powerful Automation Software MS based systems have developed a "Rocket Scientist" reputation in analytical fileds due to the historic complexity of some early systems.ESS have developed MS systems which are rugged and reliable, but above all easy to use. Simple user interaction by buttons and dialogue controls all of your analysis variables with all MS functions running in background. Add the system to your telemetry and it's just another analyser, acessible from remote monitors and your own standard user interfaces.ESS will work with you to tailor the application to your systems and your personnel.

Robust Remote Operation Remote field situations present unique problems for telemetry, data-transfer and diagnostic tools.Fortunately, every UniSys is supplied complete with a set of advanced remote operation tools based on the industry standard Symantec PC Anywhere architecture These tools allow full remote access to data and instrument control functions. You can transfer files manually or at pre-programmed times, operate theMS from a remote location and perform full diagnostic tests from any telephone line worldwide. PC anywhere is an established, reliable and secure system for total remote access.
